Deploy it from the template

Sign in, then Stacks, Create, From a template, and pick Mattermost + PostgreSQL. Give the app a name and deploy. Uppcoder tells Mattermost where its database is and what its own address is, so there is no config.json to edit and no database to create by hand.

Make yourself the admin

The app starts private: only you can open it. Open its address and create an account: the first account on a new Mattermost is the system admin. Create your team and channels before anyone else arrives.

Bring your team in

Switch the app from Private to Public on the stack page, then invite people from Mattermost with an invite link or by email. Open sign-up is off from the start, so only people you invite can join.

What Team Edition leaves out

Said up front: these are Mattermost's own limits for the free edition, not ours.
