Run WordPress with its own database in one click

A WordPress site of your own, installed and ready to log in, with its own MariaDB database and its own HTTPS address. Use it as a staging copy to try updates, themes and plugins safely, as a place to build themes and plugins with VS Code beside the site, or as a WordPress for each student on a web design course.

What you get

WordPress as its makers publish it, set up for you.

  • WordPress, the official release, with WP-CLI
  • Installed on first start with the admin login you choose, so it opens ready to log in
  • Its own MariaDB 11 database, connected for you
  • Its own HTTPS address from the first minute
  • Core, themes, plugins and uploads kept on disk across restarts, and backed up every night to a separate server

Deploy it from the template

Sign in, then Stacks, Create, From a template, and pick WordPress + MariaDB. Give the app a name. On the WordPress card your own username is already filled in as the admin; choose the admin password, and an email if you want one other than your account's. The database card is filled in for you. Press Deploy, check the summary, then Confirm and deploy. The admin login is under Your settings on the stack page afterwards.

Log in and work on it

Open the app's address and add /wp-admin to log in with the admin you chose. Install themes and plugins from the dashboard as usual. For your own code, turn on VS Code for the app: it opens on the site's files (themes, plugins and uploads in /var/www/html), as the web server's own user, so what you save is what the site runs.

What people use it for

Not shared hosting for a busy site: a WordPress of your own, for work around one.

  • A staging copy of a client's site: try a WordPress update, a new theme or a plugin before the real site gets it
  • Theme and plugin development, with VS Code and a terminal beside a running WordPress
  • A WordPress for each student on a web design course, each on its own address

Make it public

The app starts private: only you can open it. Switch it from Private to Public on the stack page when the site is ready for visitors. On a paid plan it can use your own domain.

Good to know

Said up front:

  • If WordPress needs to send email (password resets, contact forms), add an SMTP plugin with your mail provider
  • This is one WordPress site; a WordPress multisite network is not set up for you
